Crypto Asset Risk
Crypto assets (sometimes referred to as digital assets) are a financial product as declared in General Notice 1350 of 2022 issued under the FAIS Act. Investing in or transacting in crypto assets carries specific risks that differ from those associated with traditional financial products. Before transacting, please ensure you understand the following:
  • Crypto assets are highly volatile. Their value can rise or fall significantly, sometimes within very short periods, and you may lose some or all of the amount you invest.
  • Crypto asset transactions recorded on a blockchain are generally irreversible. Sending crypto to an incorrect, fraudulent or unsupported address may result in the permanent loss of your assets.
  • Crypto assets are not legal tender in South Africa and are not backed by the South African Reserve Bank or any government.
  • Crypto assets are not protected by any deposit insurance scheme or investor compensation scheme.
  • The regulatory framework applicable to crypto assets is evolving, both in South Africa and globally, and may change in ways that affect the value, availability or use of crypto assets.
  • Custody of crypto assets involves technical risks, including loss or compromise of private keys, cyber-attack, smart-contract failure and operational failure at custodians.
  • Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance, and historical returns, simulations or forecasts shown on the platform are not guarantees
